Foaming and Fizzing experiment 2017

Kia Ora Everyone

This week my whole class did an experiment on Foaming and Fizzing. First we all had to taste the baking soda and the vinegar then we had to get in our groups. Next we had to pour the baking soda into the vinegar and lastly we had to taste it. I thought it tasted like beer and it was salty, sour and yuck. At the end of the day we all had to do an Foaming and Fizzing document of what we thought. Here is a picture.

TITLE
Yuck and Sour!
QUESTION.

If we mix vinegar and baking soda together will we observe some kind of reaction?
THESIS.
Vinegar tastes sour and it is a liquid. Baking soda is a solid, soft white powder and it tastes salty and horrible. They are both food substances but based on their different. So,is they are mixed  together, there might be a chemical reaction.
HYPOTHESIS.
We predict that when we mix vinegar and baking soda an observable chemical will occur. We might see and hear an explosion, fire, foaming, bubbles, fizzing or something else. The resulting mixture might even be a difference in the size of the materials.

EQUIPMENT
AND MATERIALS:
Baking soda
Vinegar
Container for mixing
Teaspoon for mixing
PROCEDURE
Step 1:Pour some vinegar into a container to a depth of about 2cm.
Step 2: Use a teaspoon to measure in half of teaspoon of baking soda.
Step 3: Mix with teaspoon.
Step 4: Observe and record what happens.
OBSERVATIONS:
At Step 2 the mixture started to fizz. A fizzing sound was heard, bubbles were seen to appear in the mixture and the materials rose higher in the container. At Step 3,when the materials were mixed, even more bubble appeared and the volume of the materials in the container rose even higher. When the mixture was tasted, the taste was unpleasant and was similar to baking soda.

ANALYSIS
AND
CONCLUSION
The goal of this experiment was to see if an observable  reaction would take place when vinegar and baking soda were mixed together. The result of our experiment prove that our hypothesis was correct. We predicted that there would be an observable reaction, and there was. There was lots foaming and fizzing happening and bubbles appeared which mean a gas must have been produced. A quick check online showed us that the gas was carbon dioxide.

This week on Wednesday and Thursday most of the seniors went to Auckland zoo for the Zoofari trip. Some of us did not go so then we had to go to other class rooms to do our work and help the other kids in the class. I was in room 5&6 helping them and helping the teachers. On Wednesday I was cutting and drawing all day. I was getting help from Taylor. She was in room 5&6 with me. I had a good time in Rooms 5&6.

Basic facts progress

Kia ora

Here is my basic facts progress for this year. In Term 1 I was working on Stage 5 and I got a score of 34/60. In Term 2, my basic facts score for Stage 5 was 0/60 so my teachers said I was ready for Stage 6. So, I did the Stage 6 test and got 25/45. There is some hard stuff on Stage 6 but I’m lucky because we have some expert kids in Team Moana who can help us.
